One Guide for Every Procedure
Most of what you need to know before an operation is the same whatever the procedure. Rather than repeat it on every surgical page, it is gathered here so you have one place to return to before the day and after it.

Your veterinarian will give you instructions specific to your pet. Where those differ from anything below, follow theirs.
Your pet will have a pre-surgical assessment. Depending on their age, health and the procedure planned, this may include a physical examination, blood testing and other investigations chosen because the result could change the anaesthetic or surgical plan.
Tell us about any medication your pet takes, including supplements, and about any previous reaction to an anaesthetic. If your pet becomes unwell in the days before surgery, call us rather than waiting.
Adult pets are usually asked to fast from food for a set period before the anaesthetic, with water left available unless told otherwise. The exact timing depends on your pet's age and health, so follow the instruction you are given rather than a general rule.
Puppies, kittens, very small pets and animals with certain conditions such as diabetes are often given different instructions. Ask if you are unsure.
You will be asked to arrive at an admission time and to sign a consent form confirming the planned procedure and the estimate. Your pet is examined again before anaesthesia.
Most pets are discharged once they are alert, comfortable and stable. You will be given written instructions covering medication, feeding, activity and what to watch for.
Whether a pet stays longer depends on the procedure and how their recovery goes. Where a patient needs supervision beyond the clinic's operating coverage, we will discuss that with you and arrange appropriate care.

If you are uncertain, telephone. It is always reasonable to ask.

+971 56 227 8484No anaesthetic is entirely without risk, and it would be wrong to say otherwise. Risk is reduced by assessing your pet beforehand, tailoring the anaesthetic to them, and monitoring throughout the procedure and into recovery. Your veterinarian will discuss any factors specific to your pet before you consent.
Pre-anaesthetic blood testing is recommended for many patients, particularly older pets and those with existing conditions, because it can reveal problems that change the anaesthetic plan. Your veterinarian will advise what is appropriate for your pet.
It depends on the procedure, your pet's age and their general health. Routine procedures often involve restricted activity for a short period, while orthopaedic and more complex surgery usually requires a longer and more structured recovery. You will be given a realistic timeframe for your pet before you go home.
Many pets go home the same day once they are alert and comfortable. Some need longer. Where continuous overnight supervision is clinically necessary, we will explain that and arrange care at a facility equipped to provide it.
Only when your veterinarian confirms it. Returning to running, jumping or rough play too early is one of the most common reasons a recovery goes wrong, even when a pet seems to feel well.
Please ask when you admit your pet. Visiting is arranged around clinical care and the ward's routine, and for some patients rest is more valuable than a visit.
If anything about your pet's procedure or recovery is unclear, contact the clinic and we will talk it through with you.
